Make God Smile

The Scripture tells us “Without faith it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).  Faith, in its essence, is to believe.  For Christians, we are to fully believe in the character and promises of God as laid out in the Bible.  No one can receive God’s salvation from a fallen world without faith (Ephesians 2:8).  Faith is all we have, and if we do not stand firm in our faith, we will not stand at all (Isaiah 7:9).

Now if without faith it is impossible to please God then the logical implication of this verse is that with faith we can please God.  Among the many stories in the Scriptures that portray this point, I would like to highlight two stories from the Book of Matthew that shows our faith pleases God.   There was a centurion (soldier) who had a sick servant and sought the Lord for healing (Matthew 8).  Jesus told the centurion that he would go and heal his servant but the centurion replied “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.  But just say the word, and my servant will be healed” (Matt. 8:8, NIV).  The Bible said Jesus was astonished at the man’s faith.  Pause.  The living God who created all things was ASTONISHED at the man’s faith.  WOW!  O how I would love to show faith that astonishes Jesus.  And it’s worth mentioning that Jesus healed his servant that same hour.

Another story worth highlighting is the one of the Canaanite woman (Matt. 15).  She came to Jesus seeking his mercy as her daughter was suffering from demon-possession.  The problem was she was a Canaanite and not one of the chosen Jews that Jesus had come to heal.  However, she cried out to Him and said she would even take the “crumbs” of his healing power.  Her faith rested in God; that even Jesus’ scraps were enough to heal.  Jesus replied “You have great faith! Your request is granted” (Matt. 15:28).  O how I want Jesus to hear my crying and reply “You have great faith, your request is granted.”

It is faith that moves God to heal, bless, and provide.  It is faith in the power of God that astonishes Jesus and moves Him to action.  So may we show great faith in the Almighty One; knowing that not only will it make God smile but it will move Him to action.

Amen
